Safety and General Information
Students are encouraged to become familiar with various travel resources, policies, and procedures prior to travel.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation provides a number of valuable travel resources including information on road conditions and various vehicle laws.
Travel Recommendations:
- Obey all traffic laws and regulations and observe posted speed limits.
- Wear seat belts at all times.
- Avoid travel when weather conditions are hazardous.
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages or illegal substances before or while operating a motor vehicle.
- Avoid horseplay, racing or other distracting or aggressive behaviors will driving.
- Be prepared in the case of an emergency and compile a list of participants and emergency contacts and provide the information to all travelers.
- Begin travel well rested.
- Plan routes in advance and carpool or caravan when possible.
- Divide the trip into segments and stop and rest when necessary.
- Carry cell phones or other two-way communication devices for emergency purposes, but do not use such devices when operating the vehicle.
- Establish reasonable departure and arrival times to and from your destination.
- Whenever possible, have more than one University approved driver on the trip in order for drivers to take breaks and switch drivers.
In the event of an emergency or crisis in conjunction with student travel, students and/or advisors should contact the University Police Department at 701.777.3491. The University Police Department will be able connect students with the appropriate staff and/or faculty member.
